🍔 Check your ingredients: What the hummus?!
I’ve been checking ingredient labels in the supermarket lately (a dangerous thing!). Trying to find packaged foods with only natural ingredients is not easy, but if you look reeeeally hard, you can find them. Some items in nearly identical containers with the same product can have totally different ingredients inside. I’ve been focusing on removing seed oils - most packaged snacks have canola, sunflower, safflower or similar. Not everyone says seed oils are bad - in fact Whole30 rules were just changed this month to allow all oils. I’m just trying to be aware of what’s in my food.
I ran into Whole Foods last week (I usually shop at Market Basket) for some hummus. I grabbed the regular original, and stopped to look at the ingredients, mostly because I was checking for sugar which gets hidden everywhere. Sunflower oil. Bummer. This is hard! So I checked all three brands and four different types of “original” hummus.
I found one package that had no oil! Just chickpeas and seasoning. Wow! I grabbed it and ran out. I inspected later and realized this was “fat and oil free” hummus. They took out the tahini as well, which I wish were still in there. It tasted great anyway, so I’ll stick with it. Take a look at the image at the top, you can see even the organic hummus has a mix of sunflower and olive oil.
Is a little sunflower oil in your hummus the end of the world? Probably not. But at least we can be aware of what ingredients are in our food and choose for ourselves.
